OVERVIEW

Thoth is the Egyptian god of wisdom, writing and the moon. He is benevolent and often depicted as a man with the head of an ibis or a baboon.

HISTORY

Thoth is the Greek name for Djeheuty, the Egyptian god of wisdom, writing and the moon. He is often depicted as a man with an ibis' head or occassionally with a baboon’s head. Some sources list him as a son of Ra, while others claim that he sprang forth from the head of Set. Others claim that he is as old as Ra himself. Thoth is a messenger and mediator of the gods, often preferring to seek a peaceful solution to a problem. His wisdom assisted Isis in bringing Osiris back to life, and he now joins Osiris as a judge of the dead.

The man-bird hybrids who lived in the Nile Valley 5,000 years ago, were said to have an ibis-headed leader named Thoth who warned the Egyptians of the evil of Setekh (Set). According to legend, this Thoth then led the man-birds to Greenland where he founded the city of Feithera before leaving them. If this was indeed the same Thoth or an alien with the same name has yet to be revealed.

Some 4,000 years ago, Thoth saved the life of the young Egyptian Prince Amentep and bestowed upon him the powerful Ibistick, thereby turning him into Ibis the Invincible.

In the old days, Thoth (under the alias Zehuti) agreed to bestow the power of wisdom upon Black Adam, the first champion of the wizard Shazam.

In modern times, Thoth came under the spell of Circe during the so-called War of the Gods and was seen tearing up New York, until he was stopped by Wonder Woman and Dr. Fate. Even more recently, he was seen as a member of the Interfaith Deity Council of Active Polytheistics, an organization devoted to finding better ways to promote the old pantheons in the modern world.

POWERS AND WEAPONS

The extent and the nature of the powers of Thoth remain largely unknown. He has been known to grow to gigantic size, and to teleport himself and others. Thoth is extremely long-lived, having survived for thousands of years.

He is wise and just.
