HISTORY

A spacefaring race, ever interested in commercial ventures, the Palindrordnilap saw a lucrative market for interplanetary security firms in the wake of the implosion of the Green Lantern Corps. Other groups, such as the Darkstars, the L.E.G.I.O.N. and the Bellatrix Bombshells helped fill the void but none had fully exploited the commercial possibilities.

The Palindrordnilap chose Buk-50 of Aldebaran and the identical Boom and Thoom to be the core of their new security operation. All three were former members of the Poglachian Green Lantern Corps, a group of false Green Lanterns created by the Weaponers of Qward to discredit the true Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe.

Though strong, the threesome was rather limited and the Palindrordnilap required an enforcer to lead the group. They traveled to Earth to scout a possible leader, former Green Lantern Guy Gardner.

Buk-50, Thoom and Boom found themselves no match for Gardner when the yellow power ring of Sinestro was fully charged. Though the ring's power was depleted for part of Gardner's test, it later returned and he easily defeated his three attackers. Gardner listened to their offer but wanted a test of his abilities. The Palindrordnilap gathered dozens of the galaxy's worst sentients to fight Gardner, a series of battles he easily won. - [GUY GARDNER # 1-3]

The Palindrordnilap agreed to Guy's terms. He would be put in charge of the group and be paid in pure gemstones he could sell on Earth. They would rename themselves the "Gardners of the Universe," and the Palindrordnilap would get "Guy Gardner haircuts" so people would know who was really in charge. - Guy Gardner #4

Unfortunately for Guy, he had made some dangerous enemies when he had taken the yellow power ring of Sinestro for his own. The bounty hunter known as Lobo felt Gardner owed him the ring and he would stop at nothing to take it from him. Gardner was still uncertain how to energize the ring and during their fight the ring ran out of power.

The Palindrordnilap learned of their most valuable operative's problem from Bucky Sharp, Guy's agent. Arriving on Earth just after Gardner was defeated by Lobo, the Palindrordnilap offered to pay 50 million wubs, in precious stones, for the ring. Lobo accepted the deal and left the ring for them. - [GUY GARDNER # 8]

The Gardners of the Universe were later hired by their top client to investigate a pattern of death and destruction in a distant sector of space. Numerous alien races, entire civilizations were mysteriously dying. From world to world the populations either polluted themselves out of existence, fought amongst themselves until both sides were destroyed or even committed mass suicide.

Three members of the Gardners of the Universe, Lord Blaze, Nocturn and Stickfast, were already on the next planet heading towards destruction. The leader of the investigation, Gragapopdrinap, was critically injured on the alien world. They would need Guy Gardner's help. The former Green Lantern was accompanied by Ragadronilorp as they traveled across the untold light years by hyper-unit.

Each member of the team was, or claimed to be, the greatest super-hero on his world. Lord Blaze could create great amounts of heat and light. Nocturn's powers have not been revealed. Stickfast was able to increase his size to pin down a foe. They did not take to the idea of Guy Gardner giving them orders until Gardner proved he was the strongest among them. The Gardners of the Universe planned to take a prisoner to learn why a normally peaceful race would try to tear itself apart through war. The team was soon attacked by the native warriors and Nocturn was killed during the fight.

A member of the Green Lantern Corps had also been sent to investigate the threat to sentient life by the Guardians of the Universe. A rival of former Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Boodikka's emerald ring charged Gardner's yellow power ring from the antimatter universe of Qward. Once his ring was charged, Gardner saw the true cause of the death and destruction across the space sector. A secretive alien race known as the Ophidians had traveled from world to world mesmerizing their victims, evoking the latent ferocity in their natures. The Ophidians would make their victims destroy themselves.

The yellow ring negated the effects of mesmerizing powers and Gardner became aware of the Ophidians existence. Realizing the threat they faced if exposed, the Ophidians turned the Gardners of the Universe and Green Lantern Boodikka against Guy Gardner. - [GUY GARDNER # 9-10]

Gardner made his allies aware of the Ophidians' existence, forcing the malevolent aliens to withdraw. Gardner and Boodikka had to combine their powers to catch up with the Ophidians. Rather than be captured and possibly lead their enemies to the Ophidian homeworld, the starship self-destructed. The grateful natives paid the Gardners of the Universe a reward for saving their world from the Ophidians. The seven devos they were paid was equal to approximately 56 million wubs. This was enough for Guy Gardner to pay back the Palindrordnilap back for their purchase of his ring from Lobo. Gardner left the team, they have not been heard from since. - Guy Gardner #10
