NOTE
A secretive race, the Ophidians are known as mystics striving for union with their godhood. This calling had twice in their history been interrupted by alien invaders. In both invasions, the Ophidians were nearly obliterated. To guard against this ever reoccurring, the Ophidians dedicated themselves to purifying the cosmos by ending all life save their own.
Possessing no weapons of their own, the Ophidians rely instead on their mesmerizing powers. Traveling from world to world, the Ophidians would mesmerize their victims, evoking the latent ferocity in their natures. The Ophidians would not take any responsibility for this as they believed they were not destroying others, rather their victims were destroying themselves.
The Ophidians' crusade went on from world to world. Some races warred against each other while others polluted themselves to death and yet others entire populations would commit mass ritual suicide, all unwittingly at the Ophidians' direction. Few knew of the Ophidians' actions, fewer lived long enough to spread word of the Ophidians' existence.
In a sector of space untold light years from the Milky Way galaxy, the Ophidians had driven an otherwise peaceful race to war amongst themselves. The Ophidians were in the midst of the battles, directing the opposing forces toward mutual defeat. This new world had learned too late of the Ophidians. By the time they had realized the danger they were in, they too were mesmerized by the mystic race.
When the Palindrordnilap security force known as the Gardners of the Universe was retained by their top client to investigate the pattern of death and destruction in that sector of space, the Ophidians turned the native population against the outsiders. Nocturn, a member of the Gardners of the Universe, was killed at the Ophidians' direction. - Guy Gardner #9
Boodikka of Belatrix, member of the Green Lantern Corps, was dispatched by the Guardians of the Universe to solve the riddle of the troubled space sector. A rival of former Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Boodikka's emerald ring charged Gardner's yellow power ring from the antimatter universe of Qward. The yellow ring negated the effects of mesmerizing powers and Gardner became aware of the Ophidians' existence. Realizing the threat they faced if exposed, the Ophidians turned the Gardners of the Universe and Green Lantern Boodikka against Guy Gardner. - Guy Gardner #9 - 10
The Ophidians attempted to escape as Gardner made his allies aware of their existence. Their starship was able to reach speeds unimagined by their pursuers until Gardner and Boodikka combined their powers to catch up with the Ophidians. Rather than be captured and possibly lead their enemies to the Ophidian homeworld, the starship self-destructed. The Ophidians have not been heard of since. - Guy Gardner #10
