HISTORY

Yron was an inhabitant of Grenda who believed Stel (his world's late Green Lantern) had been a failure. He believed Stel was worthless against the Krydos, an alien race who considered mechanical life a blasphemy to the creator.

The Krydos attacked during Stel's funeral, scattering the mourners. Only Yron stayed to fight. Their rescuer came in the form of a Green Lantern, an off-worlder, assigned by the Guardians of the Universe to Grenda's sector.

Angered by the fact that the Guardians did not pick him, Yron attacked the Green Lantern. He ordered the alien to take him to Oa. Once there, Yron protested to the Guardians for a ring to fight off Krydos attacks on Grenda. In response to the danger on Grenda, the Guardians granted Yron a power ring.

On Grenda, Yron used sonics to shatter the Krydos' sphere projectiles. Unfortunately, the resulting dust from the spheres clogged the Grendans' systems, choking their movements and killing them. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #182

Witnessing Yron's failure, the Guardians demanded the ring back. Yron changed his tactics. He brought the battle to the Krydos outpost. Yron quickly subdued the enemy. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #182- #183

In his vanity, Yron brought the Krydos back to Grenda, so his fellow Grendans could see his victory. The Guardians and the people of Grenda thought Yron was insane to bring the war home.

The Krydos had brought corrosive bombs to use on Grenda. The first robot they used it on was Yron. With the Green Lantern defeated, the Krydos mercilessly attacked the Grendans.

As Yron was dying, he realized his errors. He realized Stel was worthy of being a Green Lantern, and that he himself was a failure. Yron died at the base of Stel's tomb. Yron's last thoughts coalesced into a last surge of willpower.

In a manner which cannot be understood, Stel was reborn. Stel quickly defeated the Krydos, and Grenda's spirits were lifted by his return.

The Grendans praised Stel, while denouncing Yron. The Green Lantern would hear none of it. Stel did not want to hear of Yron's faults, he wanted to hear of Yron's actions. Rather than as a failure, Stel thought of Yron as a hero. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #183

Yron was memorialized on Grenda, as well as in the Crypts of the Green Lantern Corps on Oa.

GLCWP NOTE

Even though Yron was a minor player in the history of the Corps, IMHO this was a great story. It helps "flesh out" Stel's history, too.
