HISTORY
- The fate of the so-called "Phantom Planet" was considered by Superman as "the weirdest tragedy in space," prompting the Man of Steel to visit the site of the former world to see for himself. At some point, the planet had been destroyed by an exploding sun though remarkably "...an uncanny side-effect turned it into a negative image of itself..." in a perpetual orbit.
- A quartet of Superman's villains, claimed the exposure to the Phantom Planet had altered his atomic structure. Allegedly, every "super feat" performed would result in a "negative Superman" to be released. Three such phantoms were shown to have attacked the twin planets of Kotyr.
-Action Comics #417
- Ultimately it was revealed the villains had schemed against Superman. The phantoms were a creation of the Marauder using an invention of his called the "triflector." Plotting to divide the Earth, the alien villains Brainiac, Grax and Marauder turned against the mere human Lex Luthor forcing Luthor to join forces with Superman to defeat the phantom Supermen and send the alien villains running.
