Synopsis: - Segretti from the Denver police force is not best pleased with private detective John Jones. The drugs that were captured following his tip-off exploded in the evidence room, taking the lives of several officers. By pulling various dirty secrets from Segretti's mind, however, Jones is able to get the policeman off his back. He is confronted by the Martian Manhunter who is increasingly annoyed at the way in which Jones is violating people's minds.
- Elsewhere, Kanto the assassin, from the planet Apokolips, tests a new drug, Bzrk on some Denver youths. It causes them first to grow to behemoth-like proportions and go on a rampage and then to explode in a devastating fireball. And the next day, the Martian Manhunter, disguised as John Jones, visits Diane Meade in hospital to try and make amends for his alter ego's actions. J'onn regrets the way in which he's never truly allowed himself to become close to the people in his life.
- Jones himself tracks down an Intergang member who has become involved in Kanto's plans. Kanto was expecting this move and stuns Jones with an electroshock in order to inject him with Bzrk. When the Martian Manhunter arrives, Kanto unleashes 'fireball protocols' which follow J'onn and attack his body and mind with images of fire. J'onn escapes them by sinking into the ground, but when he resurfaces, John has been injected with the drug and is in a beserker rage. J'onn smothers him and mentally coerces him to back down in order to prevent him turning into a fireball and the two of them set out to find Kanto and the Bzrk cure.
