HISTORY
Kreon was a Chieftain of a militaristic race from the planet Tebis in Sector 2002. It appears Kreon had been successful in many campaigns, though over the course of his military career he had lost his right arm and an eye. The Tebans glorified war and the domination of other races. Teban forces had made advances into Space Sector 3319, despite the loss of their hold on the planet Hwagaagaa due to the rebellion led by former Green Lantern Charlie Vicker.
As Chieftan, Kreon led a battle fleet into war against the Quahooga. Unlike others of his race, Kreon fought not to win wars, but to end them. To this end, Kreon bought Star Sapphire from the mercenary Flicker, in the hope to spare hundreds of his warriors from entering battle. Star Sapphire bided her time until she managed to get a weapon, slaughtering a dozen Tebans before she was stopped. Although the Tribunal of Command suggested he kill her, Kreon listened to Flicker, who promised a way to control her. He would bring an old lover of hers, the Green Lantern of Earth, Hal Jordan.
The plan was a complete failure, neither the Green Lanterns nor Star Sapphire could be contained. Realizing his mistake in trusting Flicker, Kreon assisted the Green Lanterns in the mercenary's downfall.
The deeds of Kreon may not have been approved of by his fellow Chieftains, but they did attract the attention of Hal Jordan. The Green Lantern offered Kreon membership in the Corps. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #24
Kilowog resumed his duties as trainer for the Green Lantern Corps. After Jordan brought Kreon and the small Corps to the Great Book of Oa, Kilowog told the rookies more stories of what it meant to be a Green Lantern.
Following the warnings of Amanita of Muscaria, the Corps went to Earth to fight Eclipso. Jordan and Carol Ferris were possessed by the God of Vengeance and the Corps tried unsuccessfully to free them. Kilowog would join a secret team to combat Eclipso while the rest of the Corps was sent to Oa.
Kreon had many disagreements with Boodikka of Bellatrix. He took particular disdain to her lack of discipline. Their infighting jeopardized Oa and the Guardians of the Universe during a Qwardian invasion.
Their disagreement spread amongst the rest of the Corps. Sides were being drawn between male and female recruits. Running out of options, Kilowog brought the two squabbling Green Lanterns to John Stewart as a "guest lecturer" in cooperation and tolerance.
Stewart could not teach the two Green Lanterns to like each other, but he could teach them to need each other. He did a mind scan on the two recruits, and "laterally transferred" their consciousnesses. The two Green Lanterns were taken one step out of reality to confront their fears.
Though Green Lanterns are said to be "absolutely without fear" this is not neccessarily the case. Every individual has fears, though most Green Lanterns learn to master theirs. Whatever fear they may have could prove deadly in a combat situation.
Kreon saw his fear of chaos and destruction symbolized by "Mama Denata." Tebans appear to consider females as incapable of learning the discipline necessary for military duty and as such, the psychic projection was of a demonic female. Kreon had lost an eye and an arm in his service to the Teban military. "Mama Denata" threatened to wound Kreon as he had been in previous campaigns.
Boodikka was fighting "the Chain Men" which represented her fear of being controlled. She berated Kreon for not being able to defeat Denata, but she could not defeat her foe. The two Green Lanterns had to learn how to work together or they would die.
Kreon and Boodikka changed opponents. Where Mama Denata was defeated by Boodikka, the Chain Men were bested by Kreon. They had saved each other. Stewart's lesson brought the two Green Lanterns together, and they broke off from the rest of the trainees for some privacy.
Despite their initial mistrust of the Guardians' motives, the Green Lantern Corps fought well against the incarnation of Entropy on Oa. They had not given up their individuality, but Kreon and Boodikka worked as a team.
The Green Lantern Corps was summoned to Maltus to assist Hal Jordan. He was under attack by the Darkstars and the L.E.G.I.O.N., and the Corps were needed as reinforcements. Though they were manipulated by Vril Dox into fighting the other teams, the Green Lanterns eventually saw action against The Triarch.
Some time afterwards, Kreon was ordered to prevent Hal Jordan from reaching Oa when the Green Lantern of Earth had been corrupted by the Parallax fear entity. Like Green Lanterns Ke'Haan of Varva, Laira of Jayd, Tomar-Tu of Xudar, Jack T. Chance of Garnet, Hannu of Ovacron Six, Graf Toren of Karax, and Boodikka, Kreon failed. Their power rings were taken by Jordan who reached Oa and claimed the energy of the Central Power Battery for himself. The defeated Green Lanterns were left to drift in deep space as the Green Lantern Corps was destroyed. The “Lost Lanterns” were presumed dead.
Unbeknownst to the Guardians of the Universe and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps, Kreon and the others were not dead. By circumstances yet to be revealed, the lost Lanterns were taken captive by the Manhunters and were brought to their homeworld Biot in Space Sector 3601. More than thirty Green Lanterns had been taken over the years. When the Green Lantern Corps was restored, some of the captive Green Lanterns were used to access the Central Power Battery on Oa for both energy and information, while others were to be placed inside the massive Manhunter Highmasters. One of the lanterns, Tomar-Tu, was able to escape, but the Xudarian Green Lantern went to Earth, to kill Hal Jordan.
The reappearance of Tomar-Tu led Green Lanterns of Earth Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner to mount an unauthorized Search and Rescue mission. Moments after arriving on Biot, the Green Lanterns were under siege from the Manhunters. Guy Gardner was soon taken down, leaving Jordan alone. Fighting off the new Manhunter Grandmaster Hank Henshaw AKA the Cyborg-Superman, Jordan freed Ke’Haan and then the rest of the lanterns he had defeated years ago on his way to Oa. Still believing Jordan had betrayed them, the lanterns attacked him. The fight knocked them out of the central chamber where they had been held, and into a cavernous chamber below. Escaping momentarily from the overwhelming numbers of Manhunters, they paused when Jordan did not fight back. Looking around the chamber, they had found dozens of other Green Lanterns believed to dead or missing in action, such as Lashorr, Arisia, and Relok Hag.
Kreon, the only lantern willing to listen to Jordan, was killed by a Highmaster Manhunter, which was holding Guy Gardner as its energy source. Though Jordan’s actions were crucial to the destruction of Biot and rescue of fellow Lanterns, they would not soon forget their previous battle with Jordan during his time as Parallax.
Kreon is memorialized in the Crypts of the Green Lantern Corps on Oa.
BLACK LANTERN: KREON |
During the event known as the Blackest Night, black rings desecrated the Crypts. The ring placed itself upon his corpse, downloaded all of his memories and created a duplicate of his body that rose from the grave as a member of the Black Lantern Corps.
POWERS AND WEAPONS
