HISTORY

Karmath is known for its "light-jewels" used for illumination at night. As explained by Chameleon Boy of the Legion of Super-Heroes, the jewels collect any light that strikes it and by an unknown process releases it at greater intensity. While this is useful in darkness, it can be dangerous in direct sunlight as the released light can reach blinding levels. On Earth, light-jewels are quite valuable, likely possessed only by the very wealthy.
