HISTORY

Originally known only as Clark Kent's unseen neighbor on 344 Clinton Street, the mysterious Mister Xavier was actually an alien named Xviar. He changed an unknowing Superman into only being able to use his powers when in costume. Superman concluded that his subconscious was telling him to choose between his two identities. First he tried to live 100% as Clark Kent (using his fists against Steve Lombard, telling off Morgan Edge, and even having sex with Lois Lane for the first time), but realized that the world needed a Superman. Then, he attempted to ditch the Clark persona and live as a full-time Superman, which was Xviar's plan all along. After "loading" Superman with destructive energy, Xviar pitted the hero against nine of his worst enemies - Terra-Man, Toyman II, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Mister Mxyzptlk, the Prankster, Amalak, the Parasite, and the Kryptonite Man. The goal: to escalate Superman's superpowers and the destructive energy to the critical point when Superman would explode and destroy the Earth with him - Xviar's actual mission. However, Superman realized Xviar's plan, and defeated his last enemy - Kryptonite Man - as Clark Kent, lacking both superpowers AND his vulnerability to kryptonite. Xviar himself was imprisoned on the planet Takron-Galtos. Superman's powers were restored, and he went back to living a double-life.
