HISTORY
Xax first met Hal Jordan on Yquem, as a member of the Green Lantern conference. The two formed a long lasting friendship. Months later, Jordan was surprised to find himself ordered by the Guardians of the Universe to discover why Xax was refusing to use his power ring against evil. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #9, #11, #23
On Xax's homeworld of Xaos, a power hungry insect named Zorx had attempted to steal the world's supply of yellow sugar. This sugar was needed to purify the poisonous water of Xaos. Zorx planned to force Xaos to name him sole ruler. He and his cohorts, known as the Wasp Gang, discovered the Green Lantern's weakness to yellow, and coated themselves with the petals of yellow goldipals, a plant on Xaos. At the next sugar robbery, the Wasp Gang warned Xax of a great disaster if he used his power ring. When the Green Lantern did, an atomic bomb the gang planted detonated. Xax was forced to deal with the blast and let the gang escape. Zorx had many weapons hidden across the globe, and Green Lantern soon learned he could not use his ring without serious consequences.
Xax had a plan to stop the criminals by using their weapons against them. He found one of the atom bombs, and placed devices around it that would direct the blast to the location of the sugar robberies. Xax would be protected by his ring, and the Wasp Gang would be knocked out by the explosion. The plan was interrupted by Hal Jordan, who used his power ring to detonate the weapon. The fireball fell towards the criminals as Xax had planned. Not understanding Xax's intentions, Jordan deflected it out into space.
With one sugar warehouse left, Zorx would soon control all the sugar, and Xaos would be forced to bend to his will. The sugar could not be created by the power rings because of its yellow hue. Jordan quickly devised a plan.
Xax left his world in a rocketship while Jordan kept an eye on the warehouse. Heating his planet's red sun, Xax was able to change the planet's usual autumn weather to that of summer. The yellow xanthophyll in the Wasp Gang's costumes changed to green chlorophyll, thereby making the criminals vulnerable to the Green Lanterns' power rings. After the gang's capture, Xaos' sun was changed back to its regular temperature. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #23
Throughout his career, Xax fought in many battles including the Power War, the threat of Krona and Nekron, and the preemptive strike on the Anti-Green Lantern Corps on Qward. In one mission vital to the safety of the Guardians themselves, Xax battled the extra-dimensional creature known as Maaldor. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #127, Tales of the Green Lantern Corps #1- #3, Green Lantern Vol. 2 #150, Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #1
Back on Xaos, his victories meant little to his people. The harvests of Xaos had become smaller, while the population continued rising. Soon, rival clans fought over the rights to the fields. Xax acted as peacekeeper, dividing the feuding clans. He would have the grain divided equally to all. The clans cursed his interference, wishing to die in battle rather than by starvation. The Green Lantern had done as much as he could, bringing food to the hungry. It was impossible for him to keep up with the demand.
Into this chaos came the robotic drone ships of the Spider Guild. The drones would use the planet's disarray to their advantage by launching a surprise attack. The invading forces had no fear of the Green Lantern of Xaos. After having prior dealings with the Corps, they were now prepared to counter the emerald energy of the power ring. Spider Guild colonizers were deployed over Xaos. Tracking heat sources, they wrapped their prey in anesthetizing webbing.
Xax arrived to free the townspeople who had been caught. The once angry clan members now thanked the Green Lantern for his assistance. Although he was successful in one town, Xax believed there may be too many of the Spider Guild for him to fight alone.
Battling other colonizers, Xax gave chase to his fleeing enemies. He flew after the drones, only to be caught in a yellow metal trap. The leaders of the clans soon discovered they were fighting an other worldly foe. After they were told they would be a host world for the Spider Imperium, the citizens of Xaos united. Though their Green Lantern was defeated, they would fight for themselves.
The clans were beaten back by the drones' spider venom when a green glow illuminated the battlefield. Three members of the Green Lantern Corps had been summoned by Xax. They fought the Spider Guild robots and one of the Green Lanterns, Zghithii, freed Xax.
The alien Green Lanterns were surprised the veteran Lantern had attacked without his fellow Corpsmen. By allowing himself to be captured, Xax had seen a way to unite his people. For the first time in Xaos' history, all the clans worked in a common cause. Now, perhaps, they could work together to fight their hunger.- Green Lantern Vol. 2 #190
Xax fought valiantly during the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths. Unfortunately, he was killed by a Qwardian Thunderer during the Battle of the Dark Moon of Qward. - Crisis on Infinite Earths #5, Green Lantern Vol. 2 #198
Recently, there was a recruit to the Darkstars named Xax. Whether this was the Xax of the Green Lantern Corps somehow returned to life, or a member of his race renamed in honor of their Green Lantern has yet to be revealed.- Darkstars #27
Xax is memorialized in the Crypts of the Green Lantern Corps on Oa.

GLCWP NOTE
Fortunately for Xax, insects were the largest species on Xaos. One anteater and it would all be over. As far as I can tell, Atom Ant was not rocketed to Earth from Xaos.
On a more serious note, it is not farfetched to believe the insects of Xaos had long life spans. Some species of Earth insects are known to have lived for many years.
