Comment(s):

The character Tony van Dyck may have been named for Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), who 150 years later would influence the work of painter Thomas Gainsborough.
Travelling through time, the actual year Superman arrives in is debatable. Superman drops out of the timestream in 1759, but is caught in a "cosmic whirlpool" and flies through the tail of Halley's Comet. This strangely reduces his size and changes his skin color to blue. He meets Thomas Gainsborough and becomes the model for the artist's painting "The Blue Boy." As the portrait was created in 1770, it can be explained that the "whirlpool" released Superman 11 years later than he had planned.
