HISTORY
Mistakenly believing America's super-heroes, such as Superman, the Flash and Green Lantern were created by American scientists, the government of People's Republic of China attempted to make their own super humans in a "Superman-factory." Reports indicate the Chinese had extremely limited successes in this project.
When the nuclear hero Firestorm first appeared in New York City, China was convinced he was the result of vital information stolen from their project. They suspected an American agent that had escaped captivity in China, and sent agents, led by one of their top agents, Wo Fong, to retrieve the agent and the stolen information.
The "Sino-Supermen," as they were called by the United States' National Security Bureau (NSB), possessed limited powers and costumes based on their Western namesakes. The "Green Lantern" featured an energy emitter mounted on his forearm. A single cable connected the emitter to a power pack on the belt. The emerald light emitted by the weapon was a type of force beam. Unlike the power ring energy of the true Green Lanterns, this force beam could not create energy constructs. Furthermore, the "Sino-Green Lantern" did not appear to suffer the same weakness to yellow, like the power ring energy of Hal Jordan and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps or the weakness to wood, like the power ring wielded by the Golden Age Green Lantern, Alan Scott.
The Sino-Supermen may have been genetically altered which would explain their fatal flaw. In both laboratory testing and in the field, the Sino-Supermen would glow seconds before exploding, utterly vaporizing. Whether this was based on time or exertion has not been established.
Four agents, three of them based on Green Lantern, Superman, and the Flash, staged a nighttime break in at NSB headquarters in Washington, DC. The Sino-Superman and Sino-Flash exploded shortly after breaking in. The Sino-Green Lantern exploded during a fight with Batgirl. Her timely arrival prevented the escape of the fourth agent who took his own life before he could be captured.
The United States of America wanted China to continue to believe the American heroes were created by the US, allowing Chinese to delude themselves with the disinformation.
Batgirl tracked the Chinese spies to an abandoned laundry shop. Wo Fong and a Sino-Supergirl, as well as a second Sino-Flash and Sino-Green Lantern were waiting for her, as they hoped to take her secrets. The Sino-Supermen relied too much on their powers, and were not as practiced with their powers and were easily defeated. The Sino-Supermen exploded, just as their predecessors had while Wo Fong made his escape.
Batgirl would later travel to China on a diplomatic mission under her secret identity of Barbara Gordon to investigate the Sino-Supermen. Other powered agents appeared, based on Superman, Supergirl, Batman and Firestorm. Wo Fong was killed in the ensuing battle, and the Sino-Supermen have not been heard from since.
