HISTORY

A skilled tailor in Metropolis' Suicide Slum who befriended the young fatherless Jefferson Pierce. As an adult, Jeff became a teacher, and, furious after one of his students had been killed in a drug-related crime, sought out his old friend Peter for advice. Peter suggested that Jeff become a symbol of hope, and presented him with the costume and force-field belt that would make Jeff the ghetto’s own vigilante - Black Lightning.

Some time later, Gambi sacrificed his life by leaping in front of a gun-blast meant to kill Black Lightning. His heroic death, it was revealed, was actually an act of penance. Secretly, Peter had lived a criminal life in his youth, and was in fact the man who had killed Jeff's father. Although shocked by the revelation, Jeff forgave Peter.
