OVERVIEW
"Orisha" is the Yoruba word for "god". The Orishas, or the Black Gods as they are also known, are all said to aspects of Ifé (the living land, Earth, or more specifically Africa) and personifications of abstract concepts. Shango is the living thunder, while Olorun is the sky, Oshunmare is the rainbow, and Orunmilla is the law. As legend has it, the mother of all the land and its black gods is Mawu.
