HISTORY
A mysterious figure, the origin of the woman known only as Jade remains as secret as her true allegiances.
A native of communist China, Jade wields magic powers which are demonstrated in the form of two crimson dragon tattoos on her arms which, at her command, spring to life to do her bidding. While the Chinese government did not approve of magic powers, the Nixon Front, the anti-Communist resistance in China named after President Richard M. Nixon who was assassinated, some believe by Nightwing, while visiting China some twenty-five years ago, found her abilities very useful.
When current United States President Sam Schwartz sent his wife Martina, Chief of Staff John Holliday and Assistant Attache Rey Quinones as part of an envoy team to a human rights conference in Beijing, he also assigned them to infiltrate a superhuman development project dubbed "Powergirl." Their mission was to steal Powergirl, thereby retaining the balance of power.
The small team was taken by surprise when a group of guards scheduled for rotation had still been in place. A fire fight ensued with the odds stacked heavily against the Americans. Jade appeared at that time and unleashed her twin dragons which decimated the Chinese guards.
Under Jade's direction, they made their way to the genetics sanctum. Her dragons were able to pry open the doors. Rey Quinones initiated the gestation cylinder's release sequence which would give them access to Powergirl before the People's Republic could imprint an obedient personality on her. Unfortunately they were not alone. A strike force of Nightwing operatives had arrived to take Powergirl and gunfire was soon exchanged. Jade was able to hold back some of the Nightwing heavy troopers before Powergirl emerged.
The newly born superhuman was able to bring channel energy and bring the dead back to life. Powergirl thanked the Americans for freeing her but she would not serve them or her Chinese creators. She flew through the lab, smashing her way through the roof to freedom. After the Nightwing operatives transported away, Jade flew herself and the President's team to safety on the backs of her dragons. - Tangent Comics/Powergirl #1
Jade was next seen in Czechoslovakia where she and her brother Obsidian, operating as agents of Nightwing's opposite number, Meridian, rescued Star Sapphire and the rest of the Doom Patrol from Nightwing.
They brought the Doom Patrol to Lubyanak prison in Moscow where they were told they were to meet the true head of the Soviet State. Decades after his death, Josef Stalin still ruled in secret. He had become a vampire so that he might exist forever as of the undead. The Doom Patrol was quick to oppose him but found he held Lourdes' life in his hands.
Beneath Lenin's tomb, Stalin planned to extract the souls of the Doom Patrol and feed it to the KGBeast. Their knowledge of the future would then serve Stalin. Jade and Obsidian joined with the Night Force, a rogue team of Nightwing operatives in an attempt to slay Stalin.
The mission went awry. Instead of saving the Doom Patrol, Night Force operative Black Orchid inadvertently melded Star Sapphire, Rampage and Firehawk of the Doom Patrol into one and connected them to the Earth. The new entity that was formed gained sentience, remaking itself into the form of the Ultra-Humanite. Across the world technology shorted out. Obsidian himself was shattered, Gravedigger and Wildcat of the Night Force were gone. Jade led Hex, Black Orchid and Dr. Dire Dey to escape through a collapsing teleportal. - Tangent Comics/Nightwing: Night Force #1
The rise of the Ultra-Humanite can only be seen as a threat to the Tangent Universe. How this situation will resolve itself has yet to be seen.
