HISTORY
On an Earth controlled by the Malazza-Rem, a confederacy of intergalactic outlaws known to their victims as the Horde, humanity had turned against its metahuman protectors.
When the Horde arrived the metahumans resisted but the Horde leader, Grend'll, announced he would kill one thousand civilians every time a metahuman was sighted and five thousand every time a metahuman acted in defiance. The Horde's first target was Coast City and Green Lantern led a strike force to liberate his hometown. They eventually retook the city but by that time over seven million people were dead.
The frightened populace turned against their defenders, killing, crippling or driving them away. Only one hero, the Batman, was believed to be in defiance of their control but he was only a legend.
Almost nine years later, a metahuman resistance led by Superman himself was being organized to take back Earth. Wonder Woman, having seen their destiny from the Oracles on Paradise Island, led Superman, Batman, Jimmy Olsen, and a new metahuman, Superboy, to "Ghost City," the ruins of Coast City to recruit another metahuman to their ranks.
Over the years, Hal Jordan had become something of a legend as "gravedigger." One by one, Jordan had been burying the remains of Coast City's seven million victims. Members of the Horde were toying with him and would have killed him as well, if not for the intervention of Superman's team.
Though Wonder Woman explained it was his destiny to join them, Superman gave Jordan the choice. It took the Batman to convince Jordan he could do more to honor the seven million dead by making sure the destruction never happened again. Reciting his oath, the power battery and power ring exploded from the ruins and the ring returned to his hand. He was Green Lantern once more. Still stricken with guilt over the death of his hometown, Jordan chose to wear only a mask and an arm band with the Green Lantern insignia, rather than his full costume.
After collecting Wally West, better known as the Flash, the team made their way to resistance headquarters beneath Metropolis where a seventh member joined them, the body of Metallo with the mind of Lex Luthor, Metallex. -Adventures of Superman Annual #6
The "Super Seven," as they were dubbed by Superboy, had been led into a trap by Lana Lang. The Horde's Director of Human Affairs had been sent out to flush out the Earth's remaining metahumans under the guise of secretly assisting the resistance movement. When Metropolis was targeted for extermination, Batman sacrificed his life to bring down the Horde's shield ship which trapped the people of Metropolis in a forcefield. Wonder Woman and the Flash died saving their friends leaving only Superman and Superboy to face the leader of the Horde when Metallex was overwhelmed. Green Lantern was fighting a losing battle against the mercenaries of the Horde.
On board the command ship, Superman himself died, killed by kryptonite poisoning. Rather than let the Horde win a symbolic victory, Superboy took his place as the new Superman. Seeing Superman carrying the body of the Horde leader rallied the humans in Metropolis to take up arms against the Horde.
One month later, the resistance had freed Metropolis. Metallex had been repaired and Green Lantern called him and the new Superman together to say good-bye. The death of the Horde leader had fractured the Malazza-Rem and many of them had left Earth but many were stranded and grabbed whatever power they could. It would be a continuing battle until Earth was finally free. Back in his old costume as Green Lantern, Hal Jordan was inspired by Superboy. Green Lantern left the relative safety of Metropolis to see if there were any other metahumans out there. His current whereabouts are unknown. -Superboy Annual #1
