HISTORY

Created by the Guardians of the Universe, the power ring has been wielded by members of the Green Lantern Corps for three billion years. The Green Lanterns are guided by the Guardians so as not to disrupt other alien cultures by their actions or even their presence. This can all change, though, when a native receives a power ring...

Investigating an armada of yellow-hulled battleships, possibly of Spider Guild origin, a Green Lantern in a spherical space vehicle was blasted out of the stars. His small craft plummeted towards a nearby world.

The Green Lantern's mortal remains were found by a Neanderthal-like native of that unnamed world who had seen the fiery descent. The glowing emerald ring caught the Neanderthal's attention and it reached for the object, removing the ring from the Green Lantern's hand and placing it on his own.

Alarmed by the approaching storm, the Neanderthal instinctively thought of protection and was surprised when the power ring generated a shield to keep him dry.

Taking the power battery as well, he returned to his tribe. Watching from afar, he saw his brothers dragging animals back from a hunting expedition. Thinking of a way to help them, he added wheels to the sleds they were dragging, greatly easing their burdens.

In time, the power ring meant incredible advances to the Neanderthal's world. It was not long before his civilization was thriving, technology advancing beyond that of present day Earth. Though the changes in society were generally for the better, crime became a problem. The Neanderthal, now wearing a modified Green Lantern costume, had become a hero to his people and he was ready to fight for them.

The Green Lantern was contacted by the military to defend their world from the advance of the very same forces that had killed his predecessor. Confident he could crush the alien menace, the Green Lantern flew off into space only to find his ring was useless against their yellow metal hulls. The Green Lantern was shot down by yellow-hued energy weapons.

As his predecessor before him, the Green Lantern fell to another world. The circle would begin again. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #173
