HISTORY
In Greek mythology, the Gorgons (="savage", "horrible") are monstrous sisters whose very appearance, with snake hair and sharp fangs, was frightful enough to turn men into stone. They were known individually as Euryale ("far-roaming"), Stheno ("forceful) and Medusa/Medousa ("ruler"). The Gorgons live nearby the garden of their sisters, the Hesperides.
Medousa is best known for being decapitated in ancient times by the Greek hero Perseus. In modern times, Euryale aided Phobos, Greek god of panic and terror, in a plot to kill Hermes, and was seemingly slain. Yet more recently, Euryale and Stheno encountered Lyta Hall (a.k.a. Fury II) in search for the Furies and tried to transform her into a replacement for their much missed Medousa. Their lost sister was finally resurrected, but slain in battle with Wonder Woman.
There are modern-day supervillains who have similar names and powers to the Gorgons. These include Gorgonus, an enemy of Zatanna, and Gorgon and Harpi, members of the misfit team Hybrid. Gorgon and Harpi were given superpowers when hit by beams emitted by statues as the Temple of Medusa, situated beneath the earthly portion of Mount Olympus, Greece.
