Comment(s):

Story continues next issue.
Countdown: Arena featured many appearances of parallel universe characters that had been seen originally in non-continuity "Elseworlds" stories, such as Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, New Frontier or Superman: Red Son to name but a few. It can be argued the characters appearing in Countdown: Arena were based on the characters originally appearing in those tales, thereby keeping those stories and their continuities distinctly apart from the "main" DC Universe. For the purposes of this index, the appearances here will be considered the "first appearance" of this version of the character.
DC Comics promoted Countdown: Arena by giving fans the opportunity to vote on the outcome of a number of battles.

The villainous Monarch begins the last chapter of his campaign against the Monitors, combing the entire Multiverse to enlist the most powerful or deadly heroes and villains from throughout existence—and pitting them literally against themselves! This issue, three Batmen fight, but only one survives!

Synopsis:

Monarch gathers various heroes and villains from the multiverse to battle their counterparts. The strongest are to join Monarch's army. To prove his power, he immediately kills over a dozen of those he has gathered. His base of operations is within the Bleed between Earths, and Monarch has created an arena in the quantum dimension for the battles.
In the first battle, Eve of Shadows (Earth-13), Nightshade and Shade fight, and while Shade kills Nightshade, Eve of Shadows in turn kills the Shade. Eve attempts to escape to Earth-13 but finds Monarch waiting, after he had defeated her husband, Brigadier Atom. To punish Eve, Monarch obliterates North America, killing millions on her Earth.
In the second battle, the Batmen of three Earths face off. The Batman of Earth-19 falls to the vampire Batman of Earth-43. Finally, the Batman of Earth-40 is also bested by his vampire counterpart, but not before he himself is bitten by the vampire.
Watching the battles while waiting to fight their own counterparts, Superman of Earth-31 starts to rally his fellow captives from many universes against Monarch.
