OVERVIEW

A Lakota Indian, John Butcher is skilled in tracking and combat, also having an unspecified level of knowledge of the art of the shaman. He tends to work alone, but has been seen in the company of Green Arrow, among others. He is not afraid to kill, and is particularly harsh with those who oppress his native people.

HISTORY

A Lakota Indian, John Butcher grew up in Eastern Wyoming with his parents. His grandfather would try to introduce him to the Lakota religion, but John was uninterested in the traditional ways. At sixteen, he ran away from home, lied about his age and joined the US Army. He distinguished himself and was asked to join an elite group of Army Rangers under the direction of the CIA. He was sent to Okinawa to train with the great martial artist Tsunami, and they became close friends, recognizing in each other true students of philosophy with a shared mystical streak. Here, John rediscovered the spiritual strength of the Lakota faith. He had not heard from his parents in four years when he learned that they had been killed in an explosion that leveled their store. Butcher returned to track down those responsible, using all his skills from the East and the West. Learning that the killings had been instigated by the Namdorph Corporation, John killed his way through the ranks until he uncovered their leader, Randall Corvus, a Crow Indian who had turned his back on his heritage to embrace capitalism’s more sinister elements.

Enlisting the aid of Tsunami and Green Arrow I, John finally got his revenge on Corvus. Butcher has since worked as a vigilante, and cooperated with Green Arrow, Black Canary II and the Question.

POWERS AND WEAPONS

Butcher is a physical and spiritual warrior, a superior tracker and woodsman, and a lethal hand-to-hand combatant. He favors using knives and sticks, but Green Arrow has taught him some archery.
