ALTERED EGOS | BIOGRAPHY |
HISTORY
"Altered Egos – The Stories of The Mystery Men of World War Two" by Jonathan Law (First Edition, 1977) was the first extensive piece of literature written on the subject of superheroes. Law actually started his research for the book as early as 1941, when he became a masked mystery-man himself – the Tarantula (II) – in order to come close to the subjects he wrote about. During World War II, he became a member of the All-Star Squadron, but ended his superhero career in 1950 after being questioned by the House of Un-American Activities. Finding himself blacklisted by the HUAC, he kept writing under pseudonyms. Partly because of the blacklisting, and partly because of Law's agreement with some of the heroes exposed in his book, "Altered Egos" came out as late as 1977.
