HISTORY

Alexander Burgess is the son of Roderick Burgess, British mage and founder of the Order of Ancient Mysteries. In 1916, when Alex was still a child, Roderick Burgess attempted to imprison Death herself, but accidentally trapped her brother, Dream of the Endless, instead. Hoping for power and immortality, Burgess kept Dream in the basement of Burgess Estate for nearly a century. When Roderick died of a heart attack in 1947, Alexander continued the deal. In the late 1960s, Alexander had taken over his father's Order and evolved it into a conference center teaching “New Age magic” and tantric sex. During this time he met a teenaged John Constantine.

However, Alexander eventually grew weary of it all and turned the organisation over to his lover, Paul McGuire. Years later, now an old and grumpy man, Alexander accidentally broke the magic circle that imprisoned Dream with his wheelchair. Before long, Dream had escaped and extracted his revenge on Alex. Dream gave Alex the gift of 'Endless Wakefulness', an eternal nightmare that Alex would never wake up from.

More recently, Dream died and was been re-born as Daniel, who was a much gentler aspect of Dream. Daniel ended Alex's punishment and allowed him to wake up. Presumably, Alex currently enjoys the last few years of his life with his lover Paul.
