The events in this story take place long before the death of Mars and J'onn's coming to Earth.

Synopsis:

J'onn arrives on Apokolips to rescue the children and leaders of Mars and pays Kanto a visit, asking him why he betrayed him. Kanto swears that he knew nothing of the abduction, but soon attacks the Martian with a multi-dimensional knife which can hurt him even when intangible. Imprisoned and tortured he is released by Himon, who introduces J'onn to a female Martian, My'ria'h, who has been helping to free some of the Martian children. J'onn and My'ria'h then free all the other children by impersonating Kanto and a parademon and then teaching the children how to make themselves invisible.
My'ria'h returns to Mars with the children while J'onn sets about finding the leaders of Mars. He discovers them, bodies mutilated, souls separated and barely clinging to life - the only survivor is his brother Ma'alefa'ak, who says his souls has been dissected, put back together and returned. J'onn sets the souls of the Martians free from their containment to battle Darkseid's troops.
Sending his brother back to Mars, J'onn then sets about disrupting Darkseid's quest for the anti-life equation, until Lightray arrives on Apokolips to inform Darkseid that his quest will be viewed as a violation of the pact between New Genesis and Apokolips. Darkseid agrees to end his search and J'onn is returned to Mars; but Darskeid reveals to his followers that he has an agent among the Martians.
